Always loved that idea since I read it in one of the Karl Germain books. In fact we used it in Simon Drake's Secret Cabaret TV series. I think Jim Steinmeyer managed to find us the mechanical lock. Some years ago I visited Simon Drake and he showed me some mechanical locks that he makes. He was selling them via his website and maybe still does. Big hefty lock perfect for a bit of bizarre magick.
Some years ago I heard of an excellent addition to the Spirit lock. The U shaped part had an extra hinge in it, and the lock was hung on a hasp in a locked position. When it clicked open, the weight of the lock caused the extra hinge to open and the lock fell to the floor rather than just dangling on the gasp.
That's a very nice touch. Makes for a much bigger effect. If you were doing a haunted house experience it'd be interesting to have a door padlocked and chained. Imagine a seance where you padlock and chain the door so no one can escape (within fire regulations of course!). When the padlock opens the chains drops to the ground with a crash. End of seance.
The Haunted key presentation would work beautifully with the Germain Spirit Lock - if you were lucky (and rich) enough to own one! 😊
