It's a similar shaking up and down motion with the addition of on and off pressure from the fingers and thumb holding the box. I've seen similar ideas described way back but never had much success with it. Nor have I ever seen anyone do it. Fred's method is described in The Magic of Fred Robinson. My favourite rise from that book is the one Pat Page describes. Needs updating but it would be a fooler.
The magician Bruno Copin has a version of the chosen card that is ejected from a glass, he uses a method in which the chosen card is controlled at the top and then puts the whole deck into a glass, and when shaking the glass the letter from above is fired. I found it interesting to comment on it here. He also has another method with invisible thread. Here is a link where he performs the effect without the invisible thread, greetings!
Hi Mr Britland. Thanks for your very interesting blog. Concerning Douglas Hook deck, i think that the Destiny deck sold by Card-Shark is almost the same idea, minus the trimmed edges of the cards. I made a research for the book by Douglas Hood, but couln't find any place where i can buy or download it (including lybrary.com). Is it a scarce book? However, thanks for so many trails to follow. Hi There. Haven't seen the Destiny Deck but will check it out. Unfortunately there is no book of Douglas Hood's work. He sold a few items but most of his output, dozens of tricks, were published in UK magazines like Abracadabra. It is in Abracadabra that his Hoodwinks series appears. Well worth checking out and you can buy bound volumes of Abracadabra at reasonable prices on EBay and elsewhere.
Great stuff David. Did you get to see Fred Robinson do his rising card with stripper deck? Was it the same continual shake like the wide card rise?

Thanks David - a new edition of Cardopolis is always a treat. Fascinating history, and devious thinking! Patrick

More treasures from Cardopolis. Thank you, your ongoing work is greatly appreciated.
Thanks Daniel. It seems a good time to be sharing ideas. Always amazes me what we can find in our history.
Very interesting. Thanks David and keep 'em coming please. Col
Thanks Colin.
