Thanks Colin. A few people have got in touch re Scarne's Mathematical Card Trick and speculated on where he might have got it. The earliest source I've found so far is Indetecto by Arthur Buckley. It's in The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks and was previously published in Buckley's Thirty New Card Problems. Worth checking out if you're interested in variations of these tricks.
The magician Bruno Copin has a version of the chosen card that is ejected from a glass, he uses a method in which the chosen card is controlled at the top and then puts the whole deck into a glass, and when shaking the glass the letter from above is fired. I found it interesting to comment on it here. He also has another method with invisible thread. Here is a link where he performs the effect without the invisible thread, greetings!
